I’m just back from the Dublin Tech Summit. Inspiring event.
And this evening there has been some good news regarding the planning application for the ill fated Athenry Data Centre. And although Apple have pulled out I’m certain someone will build a data centre on that site eventually.
Ireland’s mild climate makes us an ideal location for data centres, and although they do use massive amounts of energy, centralised cloud computing is actually more efficient than the alternative. The benefits (and drawbacks) of smartphones, social media, photo sharing, etc that we all enjoy wouldn’t be possible without data centres.
Plus, thanks to our climate, they can be powered in the long term by wind energy.
